world of darkness

The World of Darkness is a dark fantasy setting created by White Wolf Game Studio (now a division of CCP) as the fictional background for their popular role-playing games, Vampire, Werewolf, Mage, and numerous other titles that have come and gone over the years. In addition to the games, a variety of other products, from collectible card games to novels and even television shows, have also been set in the World of Darkness, a place similar to our own world except that it is home to supernatural beings, magical powers, and terrifying conspiracies that the majority of inhabitants are unable to perceive or at least accept. The role-playing games are played using a system of rules called the Storyteller System, reflecting the heavy emphasis on rich and personally immersive storytelling in contrast to the traditional emphasis on mechanics and tactical simulation. Each game session is essentially part of an ongoing story that is referred to as a chronicle, usually set in a particular locale within the World of Darkness.

My own desire to tell dark tales led me to the World of Darkness in 1992 and for the next thirteen years I assumed the role of Storyteller for a number of friends whose characters “lived” (or, more frequently, “unlived”) within my own unique version of the World of Darkness. I created a series of chronicles set in various cities to entertain my friends, some of which lasted only a few short chapters while others continued on for years. Occasionally I posted some of my work online for other fans of White Wolf’s games, which ultimately brought me to the attention of the publisher and led to them asking me to contribute to the World of Darkness professionally as a freelance author. After working on two books I was honored to be asked to pen the official ending to the thirteen year “story” that was Vampire: the Masquerade, the first and most successful of the company’s many games, when it was decided to end the various World of Darkness games and essentially reboot the entire thing a year later. After authoring “Wormwood” for Gehenna, I went on to contribute to six more books for the new Vampire: the Requiem game line, my last credit being The Blood in 2007. A full list of my contributions to the official World of Darkness product lines is below along with a few excerpts for those not familiar with this fictional setting or my writing style.

Additionally, as a courtesy to fans of the World of Darkness I am making available here as much of my own unofficial World of Darkness work as I can dig up. Below are character write-ups and images, city descriptions, alternative rules, story lines, and entire chronicles for one or more of the various World of Darkness games. I have categorized these resources by which version of the World of Darkness they were written for, but with a little work (and in some cases no work at all) they can be used for either version and even for games and stories that only bear a passing resemblance to the World of Darkness. Enjoy.

Vampire Players Guide Revised

White Wolf Publishing, 2003. I contributed three short essays only.
